Get ready for another rollercoaster shift in weather: After and afternoon highs nearing the 90s this week, an incoming cold front is expected to slash temperatures across south Louisiana by at least 20 degrees.Â
It's not quite an "Arctic front," but National Weather Service forecaster Mike Efferson said a system coming off the southwestern U.S. is almost sure to bring significantly cooler temperatures to south Louisiana early next week.Â
"Models are really consistent with showing a front coming through," Efferson said.Â
Temperatures in the New Orleans area are expected to start falling by midday Sunday on the heels of rain showers and overnight Saturday, Efferson said.Â
By Monday, daytime highs in the mid 60s are expected in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette, with slightly cooler highs forecast on the northshore. Overnight lows could dip into the 50s in New Orleans and the 40s on the northshore and in Baton Rouge and Lafayette.Â
That, Efferson said, means temperatures would be slightly below the usual for this time of year, just after reaching record heights this week.Â
The cool down could last through at least Wednesday across much of the region before things start to heat back up again.Â
